Roofing
Re-roofs, repairs, flat roofing and leadwork, our Signature Roofing division.
Full re-roofs, repairs, flat roofs and leadwork across Tyne and Wear, through our Signature Roofing division. A roof either does its one job or it does not, and when it starts to fail the fix has to be done properly, not patched again.
Re-roofs
A re-roof done properly means stripping the old covering back and renewing everything underneath it: breather membrane, battens and flashings, then new slate or tile. Relaying slates onto forty-year-old timber costs less on the quote and more over the next thirty years. On a terrace in Hebburn the roof was stripped and re-covered in new slate with every layer underneath renewed, and the scaffold was planned so the job ran safely along the run without the neighbours living on a building site.
Flat roofs, repairs and leadwork
Flat roofs over garages, porches and extensions are where a lot of leaks start. Sometimes the answer is a new flat roof system; often it is to rebuild it as a pitched roof. In Jarrow the flat roof over the front of the house was replaced with a pitched, tiled one with new rooflights as part of a garage conversion, and in Washington a flat roof over the front was rebuilt as a pitch with a new porch.
Repairs and leadwork cover the smaller jobs: slipped or broken slates, ridges and hips, flashings round chimneys and abutments, valleys and gutters.
Roofing with other work
Because we are builders as well as roofers, the roof can be done with the rest of the job. In Whitley Bay a full roof replacement and a loft conversion with new dormers were run together. In Cresswell the new roof was one part of a whole-house renovation.

Common questions
Asked about roofing.
Should I repair my roof or replace it?
It depends on what is failing. A few slipped slates, a cracked ridge or a tired bit of flashing are repairs. If the felt underneath has perished, the battens are rotten or you are chasing a new leak every winter, patching rarely buys much time and a full re-roof is the better money. We get up there and tell you honestly which it is.
What is included in a full re-roof?
The old covering is stripped, and new membrane, new battens and new flashings go on before the new slate or tile. Relaying old slates onto tired battens is how a new roof fails early. On our Hebburn terrace re-roof every layer under the slate was renewed for exactly that reason.
Do I need planning permission to replace my roof?
Not usually for a like-for-like re-roof. Changing the material or the shape of the roof, or working on a listed building or in a conservation area, can need consent. Replacing a large part of a roof can also bring Building Regulations into play, for example on insulation. We tell you what applies at the survey.
Can you replace a flat roof with a pitched one?
Yes. We have swapped flat roofs for pitched, tiled ones on a garage conversion in Jarrow and on a porch and front extension in Washington. A pitched roof sheds water instead of holding it and usually looks far better from the street.
Can a loft conversion be done at the same time as a re-roof?
Yes, and it is the best time to do it. In Whitley Bay we ran a full roof replacement and a loft conversion together, so the house was only opened up once and the new dormers sat properly in the new roof.
What does a quote cost?
Nothing. We inspect the roof, tell you what we found and give you a written quote with no obligation. Roofing work carries the same 10-year workmanship guarantee as everything else we build.
